Study Reveals Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
While ovarian cancer can be highly treatable when detected in the early stages, many women are diagnosed with late stages of the disease because ovarian cancer has been thought to not have known symptoms. However, a new study finds that common symptoms are associated with ovarian cancer.
Ovarian Cancer - Additional Resources on Ovarian Cancer
The American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org/) maintains a detailed section ovarian cancer. The Web site includes a basic discussion of the disease, prevention and risk factors, detection and diagnosis, staging, treatment, survivorship and frequently asked questions about ovarian cancer.
Treatment
Chemotherapy Chemotherapy involves using anticancer drugs to help control or prevent the growth of cancerous tumors.
Ovarian Cancer - Stages
Staging is the process physicians use to assess the size and location of a patient’s cancer. Identifying the cancer stage is one of the most important factors in selecting treatment options. The FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) system is used to stage ovarian cancer.
Treatment
Ovarian cancer is usually diagnosed and staged with laparotomy or laparoscopy. Both of these procedures involve surgically removing samples of tissues to determine whether they have cancer cells.
Transvaginal Ultrasound Screening May Help Detect Ovarian Cancer at Earlier Stages
Researchers at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington have been investigating a procedure called transvaginal ultrasound that may be effective in detecting ovarian cancer at an early stage.
Detection and Diagnosis
The early detection of ovarian cancer greatly increases the chances that the disease can be successfully treated. If patients are diagnosed with ovarian cancer before the cancer has spread outside the ovary, nine out of ten women typically survive five years or longer.
Ovarian Cancer - Prevention
There is no sure-fire method of preventing ovarian cancer. There is also no foolproof screening test to detect ovarian cancer. The best method of defense against ovarian cancer is a yearly pelvic exam beginning at age 18.
Ultrasound Imaging of Breasts
Breast ultrasound, also known as sonography or ultrasonography, is frequently used to evaluate breast abnormalities that are found with screening or diagnostic mammography or during a physician performed clinical breast exam.
